Join the Legion of Mary — Workers and Prayers

Jesus and Mary need you — your hands, your voice, your presence in the apostolate.

The Legion of Mary has two forms of membership. Active members are the heart of the Legion — they carry out its apostolic works, bringing the light of Christ into homes, hospitals and streets. Today, of the Legion's ten million members worldwide, only three million serve as active legionaries. The need for new active members has never been greater. We invite you to answer that call.

Active Member

Serve with Us

Active members are the hands and feet of the Legion. They commit to:

  • Weekly Praesidium meetings
  • Daily recitation of the Catena
  • Weekly apostolic work (2+ hours)
  • Daily Rosary

Every parish, every community needs legionaries willing to go out and serve. If you feel called to bring the faith to others, this is your invitation. Apply to your nearest Praesidium and begin your apostolate.

Pray with Us

If your circumstances do not permit you to undertake active membership at this time, you might consider auxiliary membership, which is designed to provide a vital service of prayer supporting the work of active members.

  • Daily recitation of the Rosary
  • Daily recitation of Legion prayers
  • Praying for the Legion's work
  • Supporting legionaries spiritually

The prayers of auxiliary members sustain and strengthen every legionary in the field. As circumstances change, auxiliary members are always warmly encouraged to consider the step to active membership.

Questions people ask us

What is the difference between active and auxiliary membership?

Active members are the hands and feet of the Legion: they attend a weekly praesidium meeting and undertake apostolic work. Auxiliary members serve by prayer instead — a vital support for the work active members carry out. Both are full members of the Legion.

What does active membership involve each week?

A weekly praesidium meeting, at least two hours of apostolic work, the daily recitation of the Catena, and the daily Rosary.

What does auxiliary membership involve?

The daily Rosary and the daily Legion prayers, offered for the Legion's work and for the legionaries serving in the field. There is no meeting to attend.

I cannot commit to weekly work right now. Can I still join?

Yes. If your circumstances do not permit active membership at this time, auxiliary membership is designed exactly for that. Auxiliary members are always warmly encouraged to consider the step to active membership as circumstances change.

How do I join?

Find your nearest praesidium and come along to a meeting, or get in touch and we will put you in contact with the praesidium closest to you. If you would rather take your time, you can receive one short reflection a month and discern in your own time.

Still unsure? Ask us anything — we would rather you asked than wondered.

Discern your call — one reflection a month

Active membership is a serious commitment. Before you take that step, walk with us for a season. One short email each month — a Marian reflection, a passage from the Handbook, news of the apostolate — and you decide in your own time whether Our Lady is calling you.

Sub tuum praesidium confugimus, Sancta Dei Genitrix.
