The Sacred Heart
of Jesus

Dear {{name}},

As the flowers of May give way to the long light of June, the Church turns our gaze from the Heart of the Mother to the Heart of her Son. June is consecrated to the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus — that Heart, opened by a lance on Calvary, from which flowed the blood and water that gave birth to the Church.

This year the Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart falls on Friday 12th June, with the Immaculate Heart of Mary kept the very next day. The two Hearts are never far apart. As legionaries we go to Jesus through Mary — and it is her Immaculate Heart that leads us, always, into the furnace of charity that is His.

In the seventeenth century Our Lord appeared to a humble Visitation nun, Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque, and showed her His Heart — crowned with thorns, surmounted by a cross, burning with love for a world grown cold. To all who would honour and console that Heart, He made twelve promises.

The Twelve Promises

Of the Sacred Heart, to those devoted to Him

  1. I will give them all the graces necessary in their state of life.
  2. I will establish peace in their homes.
  3. I will comfort them in all their afflictions.
  4. I will be their secure refuge in life, and above all in death.
  5. I will bestow abundant blessings upon all their undertakings.
  6. Sinners shall find in My Heart the source and the infinite ocean of mercy.
  7. Lukewarm souls shall grow fervent.
  8. Fervent souls shall quickly rise to great perfection.
  9. I will bless every place in which an image of My Heart shall be exposed and honoured.
  10. I will give to priests the gift of touching the most hardened hearts.
  11. Those who promote this devotion shall have their names written in My Heart, never to be effaced.
  12. The Great Promise. To all who receive Holy Communion on the First Friday of nine consecutive months, I promise, in the excessive mercy of My Heart, the grace of final perseverance: they shall not die in My displeasure, nor without receiving their Sacraments; My divine Heart shall be their assured refuge in that last hour.

A practice for June

Our Lord attached His Great Promise to the simplest of devotions — the Nine First Fridays: Holy Communion on the First Friday of nine consecutive months, offered in reparation to His Sacred Heart. Why not begin this month? The first falls on Friday 5th June.

News from the Comitium

Mission to Templemore. Some of our legionaries travelled south to Templemore, Co. Tipperary, to support a praesidium now down to just four members — a reminder to give thanks for the strength of the Legion here in Belfast. The day held Mass with Fr Connor, a Legion meeting, and street contact in the town, alongside young adults from Limerick, Thurles and Dublin who are truly on fire for the faith. See the photos →

A Junior Praesidium has begun. On Thursday 28th May we opened a Junior Praesidium for our youngest members — and it now meets every Thursday. Watch Br McAleer introduce it and share the joy of this new beginning. Watch the video →

Legio Mariae Podcast — Episode I is here. The world’s first English-language Legion of Mary podcast premiered on the Feast of the Visitation. Our first guest is Fr Martin Graham, reflecting on twenty years at Our Lady’s service. Watch it on YouTube or listen on Spotify.
