“Caritas Christi — the love that changes everything.”

Canon Justin Ong

Canon · Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest

Canon Justin Ong’s path to the priesthood is a story of radical change. Born and raised in Kuching, Malaysian Borneo, he left home at nineteen to study Chemical Engineering in the United States. After graduating and working as an engineer in Portland, he found himself deeply unfulfilled — until a quiet hour in a chapel of Perpetual Adoration opened a door he had never expected. Following a year of discernment in Europe, he entered the seminary of the Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest near Florence, Italy, where he spent seven years in formation. He was ordained on 2 July 2020 by His Eminence Cardinal Burke and has since served as chaplain at Brussels International Catholic School and as Vicar of Sacred Heart Church in Limerick, Ireland. Canon Justin Ong’s personal journey — from engineering to the altar, from Malaysia to Europe — is itself a testimony to the transforming power of Caritas Christi. His talk speaks directly to the engine that powers the Legion of Mary’s work: a love that goes beyond words and into the streets, the homes, and the lives of those who need it most.

About This Talk

Love is perhaps the most overused word in the English language — and the most misunderstood. We use it for everything from chocolate to football teams. But the love Christ speaks of is something altogether different: a radical, self-giving, world-altering force that asks everything of us and gives everything in return. What does this love actually look like in practice? And what happens when we let it into our lives?

In this session, Canon Justin Ong explores the concept of Caritas Christi — the love of Christ — and how it transforms not only the person who receives it but the person who gives it. He examines how this love shows up in the ordinary moments of life: in a kind word to a neighbour, in the patience of a parent, in the courage to forgive someone who has hurt us. This is not abstract theology — it is the most practical thing in the world.

If you have ever wondered whether the Catholic faith has anything real to offer your daily life, this is the talk that will answer that question. Come and discover the love that changes everything.

Caritas Christi urget nos — the love of Christ drives us. Not gently, not sometimes, but urgently, relentlessly, and without condition.
